Third Congressional District
Representative Tom Suozzi was trained as an attorney and CPA, and is the Congressman representing the Third Congressional District in New York for a third term. He is a member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, the oldest committee in Congress and the only committee included in the United States Constitution.
Congressman Suozzi is the Vice-Chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, Co-Chair of the bipartisan Long Island Sound Caucus, and was appointed by the Speaker to be a commissioner on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China. Congressman Suozzi is also a founding member and co-chair of the newly formed House Labor Caucus, and was previously a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Armed Services Committee
Congressman Suozzi previously served as mayor of his hometown, Glen Cove, NY from 1994-2001, and as Nassau County Executive from 2002-2009.
Congressman Suozzi has devoted his 25-year public service career to working across party lines to tackle tough issues such as immigration, the environment, common-sense gun reform, inequality, fiscal responsibility and serving those most in need. His philosophy is to work with anyone who shares his values and the common goal of solving problems to deliver for the people he serves.
In Congress, Suozzi leads efforts to fully restore the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction – a tax break that was in place to help middle-class families living in high income areas. The 2017 GOP tax bill unfairly imposed a cap on this deduction that has hurt many middle-class families across Suozzi’s district. In December of 2019, the House, with bipartisan support, passed Suozzi’s legislation to repeal the cap. At the start of the 117th Congress, Suozzi introduced legislation to repeal the SALT cap with companion legislation in the Senate led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Congressman Suozzi has been a leader in New York State to ensure the state receives its fair share of COVID relief. He has delivered funding for hospitals, frontline workers, small businesses and those most in need. Additionally, he has relentlessly fought to provide aid to state and local governments who have shouldered the immense financial burden of battling the pandemic.
As a reformer and a problem solver, in 2004 Suozzi created FixAlbany.com, exposing and rooting out corruption in New York state politics. In 2005, he was honored as Governing magazine’s “Public Official of the Year.” In 2007, he was appointed by the Governor to lead a state commission that proposed the first property tax cap, which has now become law. In 2008, the New York State League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV) named him “Environmentalist of the Year,” and in 2011, Suozzi was honored by the New York Immigration Coalition for the work he had done as mayor and county executive to advocate for immigrant rights and foster a civil discussion on immigration.
In 2010, Suozzi returned to the private sector as a senior advisor to investment banking firm Lazard and as counsel at Harris Beach law firm. Prior to his time in elected office, Suozzi worked as a litigator for Shearman & Sterling, law clerk to the Chief Judge of the Eastern District, and an auditor for Arthur Andersen & Co.
Congressman Suozzi resides in Glen Cove with his wife Helene, and their three children Caroline, 26; Joseph, 23; and Michael, 18.
