Gloria Middleton

President
Gloria Middleton took the helm as President of Communications Workers of America Local 1180 in 2018 and is the first woman and African American to lead the 9,000 active-member locals. Previously, she served as the Union’s Secretary-Treasurer and has been both the Local’s Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer. Under her leadership, the Local’s finances are the best they have ever been. She is currently the Chair and Trustee for the Local’s Benefits and Annuity funds, which have accrued more than $120 million. Middleton has served as Chairperson for the Local’s Civil Rights & Equity Committee, and for more than ten years, was the Chair of CWA’s National Committee on Civil Rights & Equity.
Before Middleton became a Local 1180 Staff Representative in 1995, as a civil servant working at the Human Resources Administration, she developed impeccable skills in research, analysis, and administrative problem solving enhanced her background with Local 1180 as a Staff Representative and Secretary-Treasurer. Middleton is a Vice-Chairperson of the Municipal Labor Committee and is an Executive Board member of the NYC Central Labor Council. She was heavily involved in forming the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies and currently serves on the Labor Advisory Board. She was also the facilitator for the Local’s Manhattan Community Coordinating Committee. As President of CWA Local 1180, Middleton is committed to leading a politically progressive union that organizes, mobilizes, and empowers members to improve their standard of living and that of all New Yorkers. Middleton continues to put Local 1180 on the map as one of the most progressive, outspoken unions with a voice of all working people.
