President
Lt. James McCarthy is President of the FDNY-Uniformed Fire Officers Association, representing 8,000 active and retired FDNY Fire Officers. McCarthy, born in Throggs Neck, New York, is a second-generation New York City firefighter. He joined the Fire Department of New York in December of 1988 and was assigned as a Firefighter to Engine Co. 21 in Manhattan, and later, Engine Co. 71/Ladder Co. 55 in the South Bronx. McCarthy served as a Delegate in the FDNY-Uniformed Firefighters Association for sixteen years before being promoted to Lieutenant in 2009.
McCarthy was then elected Battalion Delegate for the FDNY-Fire Officers Association and was elected to the organization’s Executive Board in 2014. He has served in several capacities throughout his tenure with the Union, including Sergeant-at-Arms. McCarthy was unanimously elected President on September 1, 2021. McCarthy assumes the role of President immediately.
McCarthy is honored to be elected the President of the Uniformed Fire Officers organization. McCarthy considers his election to mark the singular most significant honor of his life and career, serving those who put their health, safety, and wellbeing on the line every tour for the protection of New York City residents. In his new role, McCarthy represents a proud group of outstanding Fire Officers that play an invaluable role in keeping New York City safe and looks forward to the opportunity to fight, every day, for the needs of FDNY Fire Officers.
