Dr. Yvette M. Aguiar serves in dual positions as Supervisor and Police Commissioner of the Town of Riverhead, New York, having the distinction of becoming the first Latina in Suffolk County elected to the office of Town Supervisor in 2019.

After a 20 year career in law enforcement, Dr. Aguiar retired from the NYPD Counter-Terrorism Division in 2003. In 2011, focusing on her strong belief in the importance of education, Dr. Aguiar received a Doctorate in Business Administration, adding to an MPA in Public Administration and B.S. degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Dr. Aguiar is an associate professor of management at the American Military University and served as chair of the Criminal Justice Program at Briarcliffe College. A specialist in Homeland Security, Dr. Aguiar has appeared on various media outlets to discuss global terrorist threats facing our nation. She has lectured at numerous events, appearing at the British Continuity Institute in the United Kingdom and was featured as keynote speaker at the Continuity Planning Managers Exchange in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dr. Aguiar is a member of the Riverhead Lions, Elks and Moose clubs, and volunteers her time as a “Puppy Raiser” for the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown, New York.

Dr. Aguiar lives with her husband Paul, their Golden Retriever, Hunter and their “Guide Dog in Training”, River, in the hamlet of Riverhead, New York.
